The Program

Individual Chinese classes mean a course tailored specifically for your needs. Before the student comes to China LTL organizes a Skype interview to understand each student’s current Chinese level, strengths and weaknesses, as well as the specific areas we should focus on. Based on this, our Director of Studies then chooses the teaching team that fit the student’s needs best, creates a personalized study program, and prepares the individual study materials relevant for the course, which might be one or several textbooks, newspapers, online texts or additional materials created for each student.

The Students

Individual Chinese classes are a great way to make sure that everything taught is relevant to what the student wants to learn. The teacher can focus exclusively on the areas that student needs to improve in. Especially for someone who struggles with tones or pronunciation an individual course is a great option to quickly improve, as the teacher can pay full attention to one student’s pronunciation without having to worry about other classmates. Also, if someone wants to improve in a specific area, like spoken or business Chinese, a tailored individual course might be the best choice. The same goes for students who feel they have a too big gap between their spoken and written Chinese abilities they want to close.

Options available

There two individual class options to choose from are, the 20 hours per week standard individual and the 30 hours per week intensive individual program. The intensive individual program is the fastest way of getting ahead, with six hours of class per day which allows us to focus on several different areas at the same time and it is with this program that student’s progress the fastest. The standard individual program allows for more free time and self study, as well as the opportunity to explore Shanghai. Please note that an individual class at LTL lasts a full 60 minutes.

Another option is to combine an individual course with a small group course. This small group & individual course combines 20 hours of small group class with 10 hours of 1-on-1 class per week. Which means that while during the small group classes the course students will follow the LTL curriculum, during the individual classes students can focus on areas they want to improve in or for example just work on their tones.

Click to find out more about Shanghai Safari

Shanghai Safari teaches you Mandarin by have you speak on the streets of Shanghai – where better to learn? Find out how to shop not by studying a textbook, but by going out and shopping. With Shanghai Safari you will learn how to buy a subway card at a subway station; how to understand a menu, at a restaurant. These are things we believe make sense to be taught outside the classroom. You will be accompanied by a certified Mandarin Teacher who not only knows where to go, but also the vocabulary you will need when you get there. They will teach you all the necessary words in advance, then take you to places where you can engage in conversations and try the vocabulary in real life situations. Your teacher will help if necessary but more importantly, will give you feedback on the spot. During your “cool down” session the teacher will also give you a detailed explanation about additional sentences that could have been used and what the words meant that you didn’t understand.

How a session works:

1) First you “warm up” with your teacher, who will explain which situations will be practiced today and go through the vocabulary and sentence patterns needed.

2) The Safari starts, from buying red socks and a winter coat at a shop to discussing rental prices with a property agent, according to your Mandarin level, the safari will increase in complexity of vocabulary and sentence patterns in each session. Live the Language has twenty different Safari Trips pre-prepared for you.

3) During your “cool down” session, your teacher reviews with you the additional vocabulary that has been learned and when, how and why misunderstandings might have occurred.

Vincent School Dinner Shanghai

Standard Individual Shanghai

I was aiming for HSK5 for my duration here. My teacher was very helpful, he adjusted to my aims and goals. He was attentive to my particular interests, and that proved beneficial to my career goals as well. My spoken progress was very fast, and because we alternated effectively from spoken to written material, this allowed me to cover all bases of the language. I would definitely recommend this course.
