Meaning “Northern Capital,” Beijing is filled with centuries of history and culture. It is also probably one of the world’s safest capital cities an the origin point of standard Mandarin, the official dialect of China. This means that Mandarin is not only taught in schools but also spoken on the streets. Put your lessons to use as you visit ancient temples and modern marvels, truly experiencing both the past and future of this fascinating city. We could write pages and pages about Beijing, it’s art districts, historic old town, the amazing food, crazy nightlife and the enormous energy this city has, but you will just have to come yourself and see. After living here for more than 10 years, we can confidently say that there is probably no more exciting, energetic, and amazing city to visit on this planet right now.

LTL in Chengde
LTL in Chengde is located right in the middle of the old town, next to the Imperial gardens and old Summer Palace and the LTL team is 24/7 available to support you. Our students in Chengde study and live 100% China. That means no group classes or students studying together in the same building to make sure you will not be tempted to speak English during class or lunch breaks. Classes are organized and planned individually in a location close to your home.
If you are looking for a more international environment where you can meet other foreigners, speak English and find a cultural environment more similar to yours, we recommend to have a look at LTL Beijing or Shanghai instead.
With clean air, great hiking, and a generally slower pace of life, Chengde is very different to China’s large metropolises. At the same time, Chengde was the imperial summer capital during the Qing dynasty and China’s emperors spent their summers here, built their summer palaces, temples and the imperial mountain resort. Even though only two hours northeast of Beijing, located in the Northern mountains next to the Great Wall, with a cool breeze during the summer, great air quality and with several UNESCO world heritage sites in the city, Chengde is little known to the international tourist community, which is unlucky for the average China tourist, but very lucky for LTL students.
Almost unknown outside of China, you will probably not meet a single other foreigner in Chengde. There is not a single Mc Donald’s restaurant in Chengde and pretty much nobody speaks English. Also, as a the former imperial summer capital, many inhabitants are descendants of the former extended imperial family and ruling aristocracy, which means that very standard Mandarin is spoken throughout the city – probably the best in all of China. LTL students live with a Chinese family, study 1-on-1, and are fully immersed in a Chinese language and culture environment in Chengde.
If you want to see a side of China that is slower, less developed, cleaner and more traditional than China’s large cities, while still being surrounded by native Mandarin speakers, experience China’s history and want to be fully immersed into Chinese culture, a Chinese course in Chengde or the LTL Two City Combo combining a Mandarin course starting in Beijing or Shanghai, only moving to Chengde after you settled into China for a while are for you.

There is probably no more vibrant, young, and energetic than Shanghai today. Everything in Shanghai is bigger, better, faster. The city is not only home to 24 million people, but also has the world’s biggest subway system, a mix of old and new and is the economic center of the world’s second largest economy. Walking through the many cafes and restaurants in the mornings on the way to school, having dinner with your classmates on the Bund overlooking Shanghai skyline and exploring the night scene right at the doorsteps of the campus building is an experience one must have lived to describe. While doubtlessly very big and today one of the world’s prime cities, Shanghai is also very green, with a lot of parks, trees and a well preserved old colonial district with small houses and alleys where you can still feel the Shanghai of old, when it was called the “Paris of Asia” and an early cosmopolitan melting pot.
