For the following dates in 2012, classes will be moved from a working day to a weekend:

  • Thursday, January 26th – All classes are moved to Saturday, January 21st
  • Friday, January 27th – All classes are moved to Sunday, January 29th
  • Friday, October 5th – All classes are moved to Saturday, September 29th

Why it works this way

Because Chinese holidays follow a lunar calendar, the dates can change from year to year. In an attempt to create consecutive days of holiday time for people to travel to their hometowns, workers in China are often required to substitute a weekend day for a mid-week working day. In this way, you still get the same number of working days and holidays, but the holidays are blocked together.

It’s important to note that this day-swapping is usually only followed by government offices. All other companies usually interpret the schedule as they see fit, provided they offer the actual holidays as time off.

At LTL, we believe the work day substitution makes sense when it creates a weeklong holiday. This gives our staff and students the chance to spend the time necessary to take a proper trip. However, it just doesn’t make logistical sense for us to, for example, schedule classes the Saturday and Sunday before Qingming Festival in order to create a 3-day holiday from Monday-Wednesday.

So, for Chinese New Year and National Day, LtL will follow the official Chinese government system for swapping working days for weekend days. For all other holidays, we will only close on the day of the holiday. It’s important to note that you will never lose credit for classes canceled due to a Public Holiday. A make-up class will always be scheduled for another day at your convenience.
