Speakers of Chinese Dialects
Students who grew up speaking Chinese accents like Cantonese, Hokkien or Hakka at home often learn Mandarin faster than most other students who only started to get exposed to Chinese from an adult age onwards. At the same time however their needs are different to most other students, in many cases quickly learning new vocabulary, but struggling with Chinese characters and pronunciation.
LTL offers special 1-on-1 classes in Beijing, taught by certified teachers, to help Chinese heritage speakers to use the advantage of exposure to Chinese languages from an early age on to progress quickly with their Mandarin language studies.
As each student’s linguistic background is different, the best way to study Mandarin Chinese for a speaker of Chinese dialect has to be individually planned and organized. As a first step we will organize a Skype call with you, where our Director of Studies will talk to you about your situation, background and study aims. Based on this, LTL will then design a specialized curriculum for you, to help you to utilize the linguistic advantages of your background and maximize your language progress during your course in Beijing.
Please note that certified teachers for speakers of Chinese dialects are only available in Beijing.

Mandarin Heritage Speakers
Students mainly from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and other overseas Chinese societies
Many LTL students from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, often called Chinese heritage speakers, have been exposed to Mandarin from an early age on, either at school or at home, but do not use it as their main language during their education and daily life. Many overseas Chinese also have a quite uneven spoken/written Chinese level, due to the way they learned the language.
Joining a standard advanced Chinese group class is usually not be very effective with this background, as classmates from countries like Japan and Korea or students who studied Mandarin at universities outside of China might be very good in reading and writing Chinese, but lack in speaking. Further, many overseas Chinese have had a lot of practice speaking Chinese in specific areas, for example at home, but not in other settings, for example business or law, requiring special attention in those areas.
LTL offers special 1-on-1 classes for advanced speakers of Chinese, with a focus on helping you to improve your Mandarin in the areas that you need most, while building on your existing language knowledge. This always starts with a personal assessment of your current Mandarin level, both spoken and written by our Director of Studies before you come to China. Based on this assessment LTL will create a personalized study plan for you taught by a specially trained teacher to help you to reach fluency in Mandarin as quickly as possible.

My teacher is very good at helping me to build on my Cantonese language skills when studying Mandarin. She speaks only Mandarin during class and as a native Cantonese speaker, I found this really helped to improve my spoken Chinese. She is also very good at explaining subtle grammar points and makes the classes a lot of fun. I really enjoy my course at LTL.
